The Royal Wedding

IN THE NAME OF GOD THE MOST GRACIOUS THE MOST MERCIFUL:

STATEMENT FROM THE ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH MUSLIMS AND OTHERS

We the undersigned congratulate His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Ms Catherine Middleton on their forthcoming marriage.

We must remember that at the heart of the pomp and ceremony the focus of the people of the United Kingdom and around the world, will be two young people, who have chosen to live their lives together, and two families that will be united through this marriage. To them, this nation’s future King and Queen, we offer our good wishes and pray that God will look in favour on William and Catherine and all who are made one in marriage. Through God’s love, may their love deepen and their wills strengthen, to keep the promises they will make, that they may continue in life-long faithfulness to each other.

In a time when marriage is in decline, it’s heartening to see this tradition kept alive by Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Marriage is a blessing.

We deplore any attempts from any quarter to disrupt the wedding or to hold demonstrations against it. This is a joyous occasion for the British people from all backgrounds and we stand IN SOLIDARITY!

We hope and pray that the wedding will proceed without interruption.

The Children’s Fire

Tim “Mac” Macartney founder of Embercombe (www.embercombe.co.uk) introduces the “Children’s Fire” to the attendees of the Qi Global summit in Singapore. He speaks of how over a period of 20 years he was trained by a group of mixed-blood Native Americans to appreciate that many ancient cultures used to govern themselves by a fundamental guiding princiciple, “no law, no action, shall be made that harms the children”…the Children’s Fire (a small flame or fire) was placed at the centre of their meetings as a reminder of this principle. Mac was encouraged and inspired to bring this idea to the places he worked, in business and as far as his sphere of influence can reach. He invites us to consider, “what kind of culture is it that would not place the Children’s Fire at the centre of its decision making bodies and halls of power?”

Islamic Relief: Japan Tsunami Appeal

People are being urged to help Islamic Relief get much-needed aid to the people of Japan, as the country struggles in the aftermath of an earthquake, tsunami, and a growing nuclear crisis.

The full scale of the disaster is now starting to emerge, following a devastating tsunami which swept the north-east of Japan after a massive earthquake struck just off the coast. The tidal waters swept away homes, livelihoods and infrastructure, and a nuclear emergency has been declared with explosions at least one power station. More than 200,000 people have been evacuated from the area, and 300,000 people had to flee their homes across the country.

At least 16,000 people are thought to have died in disaster. It is expected that the confirmed numbers of fatalities and casualties will rise as the waters recede, with local police warning that the death-toll in the Miyagi prefecture alone could top 10,000.

Islamic Relief’s emergency teams are on standby to deploy to Japan and we’re also preparing to channel aid through partner agencies on the ground. Please support our efforts to help the people of Japan

Prayer for our Brothers and Sisters in our Human Family

Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with those who are grieving, suffering pain, or who have been affected by the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

O Allah, may everyone sense Your loving compassion, which calms our troubled hearts and shelters our anxious souls. We remember those who have died and we pray for those who mourn for them. We pray for those who may be affected as the tsunami spreads across the Pacific. We pray with humility with our troubled and struggling brothers and sisters in our human family.

We pray for our brothers and sisters suffering in Japan, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, New Zealand and other countries. May we dare to hope that through the generosity of the privileged, the destitute will receive of Your blessings, to glimpse hope, warmth and life again.

We pray for Earth, may You rejuvenate her and protect her from harm, so she may continue to nurture life, especially our human family for generations to come. May we come to understand how to live in harmony with our planet and stop hurting her or harming Your other creations. Help us to walk lightly on Earth, with respect and compassion, conveying Your blessing, not being ourselves a burden.

We seek only Your divine Mercy and tender kindness and pray for the sake of Your beloved, Prophet Muhammad and his noble family, peace and blessings be upon them.

Ameen

Culture and Intellect

By Imam Abdassamad Clarke
Ihsan Mosque, Norwich

Muslims have been misled by the failed agendas of multiculturalism into making Islam something intrinsically foreign.

Dress is one aspect. The point of dress, for both men and women, is modesty and to cover what ought not to be seen in public. Every race, nation and culture has found something from its indigenous culture that fitted these criteria. Many modern Muslims in the West, on the contrary, see the matter as a cultural one, and that Islam requires a certain cultural style of dress. The result is that in the present climate, in which the most downtrodden, disadvantaged and uneducated segments of our society are being led to believe that the Muslims are the source of all their problems, Muslim women, for example, must endure unremitting hostility as they go about their daily affairs because they have chosen to mark themselves out culturally as belonging to a foreign culture.

Mosque design is another. A mosque is a basically an open space dedicated to worship of Allah. If it is in a cold climate, it probably needs something to keep out the cold. If it is in a hot climate, it needs shady areas to keep out the sun. The old Arab mosques are stylistically and architecturally different from the Persian mosques, which differ from Chinese mosques, which are different from those of the sub-continent’s mosques or Ottoman mosques, which are all different from the great mosque of Jenné. However, in the West, people insist on importing alien styles of architecture that stick out, reinforcing the agenda of ‘multiculturalism’ that Islam is a culture and not a science of thought and how to live one’s life.

All of this has resulted in a heated and hostile response from the indigenous people towards Islam, which they perceive as being cultural, precisely because Muslims present Islam as a cultural matter, as something foreign. Apart from the hurt this causes a great many people, this undermines our fundamental duty which is to summon people to Allah and His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in a rational and meaningful way NOT to one of our many national cultures or a syncretic ‘Islamic’ culture.

As to the token of ‘British’ or ‘European’ Islam which is usually touted by the people least qualified to do so, that momentum is unstoppable, but it is not the issue. No one need design a ‘British’ form of Islam, but rather we must concern ourselves with our deen, and the cultural identity will speak for itself.

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring

By Bulleh Shah

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
The lesson of love-rapture when first I read
The mosque my heart began to dread
Into the Thakur’s abode I fled
Where a thousand conches sing

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
When the ways of love-rapture I gained
Differences of me and you were not sustained
The shell and pith were washed clean, unstained
Wherever I look the Friend is befriending

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
Heer-Raanjha came into fusion
Erring Heer search in the moors had begun
In her shawl frolicks beloved Raanjhan
I have no sense now, nor that awareness thing

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
Reading, re-reading the Qur’an, Vedas, scholars are tired
Marks on foreheads by myriad rubdowns are sired
God’s not in Mecca nor in holy shrines mired
Once light enters the heart it’ll forever ring

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
Burn down the prayer-mat, crack the ablutions vessel!
Forsake the rosary, the priest’s scepter, his cudgel!
Hear the Love-raptured declare from the heart and yell
“Give up sanctioned fare, take to carrion eating!”

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
A lifetime wasted in the mosque
The pith a profane, brimming cask
Never Unity focus of the praying-flask
Now why the raving, ranting?

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring
Love-rapture made me forget prostrations before You
Now why the shrewish wrangles construe?
Long silent Bullha to silence says adieu
He’s in raptures! loving and loving

Every moment love’s a new surge of spring

The Bundle of Sticks

By Aesop

AN OLD man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He asked his servants to bring in a bundle of sticks, and said to his eldest son: “Break it.” The son strained and strained, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried and tried again, but none of them were successful. “Untie the sticks,” said the father, “and each of you take a stick.” When they had done so, he called out to them: “Now, break,” and each stick was easily broken. “You see my meaning,” said their father…

What is Islam?

By Paul Salahuddin Armstrong

The word “Islam” is an Arabic word which means “submission to the will of God”. This word comes from the same root as the Arabic word “Salam”, which means “Peace”. As such, the religion of Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind and surety of heart, one must submit to God and bring one’s life in accordance to the Divine will. The most important truth that God revealed to mankind is that there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God, hence it’s wise to recognise and submit to this truth.

Who are the Muslims?

The word “Muslim” means one who submits to the will of God, regardless of their race, nationality or ethnic background. Being a Muslim entails recognising and submitting to God’s will, while doing one’s level best to live in accordance with His message. Some people mistakenly believe that Islam is just a religion for Arabs, but nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are there converts to Islam in every corner of the world, especially in England and America, but by taking a look at the Muslim World from Bosnia to Nigeria, and from Indonesia to Morocco, one can clearly see that Muslims come from many various races, ethnic groups and nationalities. It is also interesting to note that in actual fact, more than 80% of all Muslims are not Arabs – there are more Muslims in Indonesia than in the whole Arab World! So even though it is true that most Arabs are Muslims, the large majority of Muslims are not Arabs. However, anyone who submits completely to God and worships Him alone is a Muslim. Continue reading
