The Sparrow in the Hall
“When we compare the present life of man on earth to that time of which we have no knowledge, it seems to me like the swift flight of a single sparrow through the banqueting hall where you are sitting at dinner on a winter’s day with your thanes and counsellors. In the midst there is a comforting fire to warm the hall; outside, the storms of winter rain or snow are raging. This sparrow flies swiftly in through one door of the hall, and out through another. While he is inside, he is safe from the winter storms; but after a few moments of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintry world from which he came. Even so, man appears on earth for a little while; but of what went before this life or of what follows, we know nothing.”

Wolverhampton Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day is Saturday 26 June 2010. The day is an annual opportunity for the nation to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, and from veterans to cadets.
Across the country people are getting involved: communities are holding local events and businesses are showing their support.
In Wolverhampton on that day there will be two key events. The first is a Parade of serving armed forces personnel, veterans including a contingent from the Dutch Princess Irene Brigade. The Parade will step off from Wulfruna Street at 11:15 and return to St.Peter’s Square via Lichfield Street culminating a raising of the Armed Forces Flag in the presence of the Mayor . The second event takes place the afternoon is a free public exhibition between 2:00pm and 4:00pm at the Civic Halls. This event is called ‘Celebrating Armed Forces in Wolverhampton’ and will include exhibitions and activities relating to different aspects of Armed Forces life and history. Examples include 3 linked displays outlining the contribution of BME communities during the war, Air Force Cadets, Gazebo Theatre and displays from the British Legion. The exhibition will also feature work by children from Wolverhampton Schools which will be on display at the Civic Centre from Monday 21 June.
To start the Armed Forces Day celebrations the Mayor will preside over a short flag raising ceremony at 10:30am on Monday 21 June to tie in with simultaneous flag raising ceremonies across the Country.
Muslim-Jewish Relations in South Asia
On the 15th June 2010, Mr Paul Salahuddin Armstrong, Director for Interfaith and Interpolitical Dialogue at the Association of British Muslims, attended an academic seminar, presented by Dr Navras Jaat Aafreedi Ph.D. The seminar entitled Muslim-Jewish Relations in South Asia, was organised by the Woolf Institute. The event took place in Wesley House, Cambridge. Mr Armstrong said, “I found the presentation by Dr Aafreedi immensely rich and interesting. Previously, I knew little about South Asian Jews or their interrelations with Muslims living in the Sub-Continent. Dr Aafreedi is undertaking some intriguing research and splendid work in this area.”

“The stronger one is the one who can absorb the violence and anger from the other and change it to love and understanding. It is not easy; it is a lot of work. But this is the real jihad.”
– Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bukhari
“May Allah bless Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bukhari, raise his spiritual station in paradise, bless him and his family with ever more light, grace and peace… Sheikh Bukhari was a very special man, someone whose presence we will all miss dearly…”
– Paul Salahuddin Armstrong, Director for Interfaith and Interpolitical Dialogue, Association of British Muslims.

There is another way…
We always have a choice, we don’t need to behave like unthinking beasts worse even than animals. Whatever happens, there will never be peace unless we strive for it. How many escalate crises, towards war, mindless, heartless conflicts? There is another way… If we want peace, we must live for peace, devout our lives to being the best that is human. Peace is most certainly attainable, but will only be established when we desire it above arrogance, conflict and ignorance; when our hearts are filled with light, compassion and most especially love. All people are brothers and sisters to one another, whatever their ethnicity, creed or nationality. When humanity really understands and feels this, how then will we be able to treat each other in the appalling ways we so often do?
