Buddha: Real and Unreal

“Those who take the unreal for the real, and who in the real see the unreal,
they, wandering in the sphere of wrong thought, will not attain the real.

Those who have known the real as the real, and the unreal as the unreal,
they, moving in the sphere of right thought, will attain the real.

As the rain penetrates the badly thatched house, so lust enters the
(spiritually) undeveloped mind.

As the rain does not penetrate into the well-thatched house, so lust does not
enter the (spiritually) well-developed mind.

The evildoer grieves in both worlds; he grieves ‘here’ and he grieves
‘there’. He suffers and torments himself seeing his own foul deeds.

The doer of good rejoices in both (worlds); he rejoices ‘here’ and he rejoices
‘there’. He rejoices and is glad seeing his own pure deeds.

The evildoer burns in both (worlds); he burns ‘here’ and he burns ‘there’.
He burns (with remorse) thinking he has done evil, and he burns (with
suffering) having gone (after death) to an evil state.

The doer of good delights in both (worlds); he delights ‘here’ and he
delights ‘there’. He delights (in this life) thinking he has done good and he
delights (after death) having gone to a state of happiness.”

– Dhammapada 1:11-8 (Sangharakshita)

Does Islam permit the beating of Women?

“Men are the support of women as God gives some more means than others, and because they spend of their wealth (to provide for them). So women who are virtuous are obedient to God* and guard the hidden as God has guarded it. As for women you feel are averse,** talk to them suasively; then leave them alone in bed (without molesting them) and go to bed with them (when they are willing).*** If they open out to you, do not seek an excuse for blaming them. Surely God is sublime and great.” Al-Qur’an 4:34 (Ahmed Ali)

Footnotes:

Qawwam (root QWM) in line 1 does not mean lord or master, but provider of food and necessities of life, and through it’s form qaim, to take care of; and qanitat only means devoted or obedient to God, as in 2:116, 16:120, 33:35, etc. See Taj. Al-ghaib similarly means the unknown, unseen, and the hidden as here.

** Nushuz: Apart from rising up, ill treatment, it also means aversion to an act, and has been used in this sense here as in 4:128 for men’s aversion.

*** For the three words fa ‘izu, wahjaru, and wadribu in the original, translated here ‘talk to them suasively,’ ‘leave them alone (in bed – fi’l-madaje’),’ and ‘have intercourse’, respectively, see Raghib, Lisan al-‘Arab and Zamakhshari. Raghib in his Al-Mufridat fi Gharib al-Qur’an gives the meanings of these words with special reference to this verse. Fa-‘izu, he says, means to ‘talk to them so persuasively as to melt their hearts.’ (See also v.63 of this Surah where it has been used in a similar sense.) Hajara, he says, means to separate body from body, and points out that the expression wahjaru hunna metaphorically means to refrain from touching or molesting them. Zamakhshari is more explicit in his Kshshaf when he says, ‘do not get inside their blankets.’ Raghib points out that daraba metaphorically means to have intercourse, and quotes the expression darab al-fahl an-naqah, ‘the stud camel covered the she-camel,’ which is also quoted by Lisan al-‘Arab. It cannot be taken here to mean ‘to strike them (women).’ This view is strengthened by the Prophet’s authentic hadith found in a number of authorities, including Bukhari and Muslim: “Could any of you beat your wife as he would a slave, and then lie with her in the evening?” There are other traditions in Abu Da’ud, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, Ahmad bin Hanbal and others, to the effect that he forbade the beating of any woman, saying: “Never beat God’s handmaidens.”

Up To Four? And Independent Modern Women

By Paul S Armstrong

If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or that which your right hands possess. That will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.” Holy Qur’an 4:3 (A. Yusuf Ali)

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been quizzed on this very issue. How many wives does Islam allow men to have? Before we can even begin to answer this question, we must consider the historical context of the verse above. The Holy Qur’an was revealed 14 centuries ago in 7th Century Arabia, a very different society to the one’s in which almost anyone lives today. Even those remaining regions, relatively undeveloped in Arabia, are still very different to the society in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed. After 14 centuries, so much has changed, for starters, the Holy Qur’an is believed in and recited in modern Arabia and to varying degrees modern Arabs, the majority of whom are Muslims, try to adhere to it’s teachings.

In the 7th Century CE, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, started out by himself and then with a small, growing group of friends – the embryonic Muslim community. Many people were opposed to his teachings, preferring to ignore them and stay in darkness, rather than address the social issues of the day. The beginnings of the concept of human rights may well have started with King Cyrus the Great, but were long forgotten in the 7th Century! People were routinely bought and sold, few took issue with this practice. Women suffered especially badly, as one would perhaps expect, when all life was something valued more in terms of gold and silver, than as something priceless and sacred.

Images in Islam

By Paul S Armstrong

The ban on images is not a universal one and views on this vary a great deal due to context and interpretation. Islam shuns idolatry of any kind whether external or even more importantly, internal (e.g. pride, vanity).

The ban on images derives from a line of reasoning that forbids anything that could possibly lead to something bad. The trouble with that line of reasoning, is that we’d have to ban paper, as paper can be used to print pornographic magazines! Okay, so what then do we write/print copies of the Qur’an on? Hence, this line of reasoning isn’t something unanimously agreed upon and there are even some scholars who reject it outright. As for those who believe in such reasoning, even they can’t follow it properly, for reasons such as the aforementioned. Which means they follow it in a hypocritical fashion, and if anyone reads what the Holy Qur’an states on the subject of hypocrisy, they’d have to question these people’s legitimacy as scholars and representatives of Islam!

The evidence used for the banning of images outright, is found in the hadith literature, not in the Holy Qur’an. The hadith have long been recognised, even by professors of Islam, as being subject to many defects and even outright fraud. For this reason, each hadith narration is categorised according to it’s reliability, from very sound to most likely fraudulent. Indeed, a whole science of Islamic studies developed around the subject! The Holy Qur’an is the only truly sacred scripture of Islam, thus anything else which contradicts it’s teachings can be safely disregarded, including dodgy hadiths. Which leaves nothing left to support a ban on images!

The Ottomans and Persians especially, often drew or painted pictures and there exist illuminated manuscripts which even depict Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The most fierce opposition to images at the present time, originates from the Saudi sponsored Wahhabi sect, which has been responsible for so much destruction of our Islamic heritage and even the present defamation of Islam, through their ever persistent fanaticism.

Yom Kippur 5771 (2010)

Yom Kippur is one of the most sacred days in the Jewish calendar. Jews fast, pray, reflect and seek forgiveness for their sins over the past year. Jews devote the entire day to G-d, refraining from work, food and sexual relations. We wish anyone remembering this day, a very blessed Yom Kippur, along with the mercy and forgiveness of G-d.
